Victory High School
SENIOR CLASS of 1938
Silhouettes by Paul Barton
When no yearbook was produced for Victory High Schools Class of 1938 due to the Great Depression - a graduating senior, Paul Barton, decided to do something about that, according to Fred G. Layman, a local authority on Harrison County and collector of Victory High School memorabilia. He created silhouettes for each of his graduating classmates 145 of them all of which were published on May 20, 1938, in the monthly school newspaper, The Victory Optic . Class advisors and principal were also included.
At his tender age, Paul probably never realized, in doing a random act of kindness for his fellow classmates, what a remarkable legacy he would be leaving - not only for them - but even for those of us who have no relationship to the people immortalized in silhouette. There's something about this work that strikes at our hearts - perhaps because it demonstrates the affection and bond we have for our classmates.
What made these silhouettes even more endearing is the fact that he drew (or cut) his own image to appear as though he had a paper bag over his head! This single gesture reveals volumes about him. It tells us that here was a humble person with a strong sense of humor; it tells us that he was more interested in making people smile than perpetuating his own image. This is how Paul Barton wanted to be remembered!
The young artist had no way of knowing that this would become his life's work. A few short years later, in 1942, after attending Salem College, he enlisted to fight in World War II, and was shot down during a bombing raid over Germany on August 4, 1944. Paul Barton, son of a local minister, died twice a hero.
The following list is a combination of the Silhouetted names, and those classmates listed in the 1938 class reunion roster. For reasons unknown, not all names listed here have a matching silhouette. However, it was not uncommon for families to move across town to follow work or to suspend schooling temporarily in order to help support the family during the Depression. Some names may, unknowingly, be repeated if a middle or nickname name was used.
