Salem Independent District
SALEM INDEPENDENT DISTRICT. formed from Harrison
and Doddirdge counties, was established February 18, 1871; page 96 of 1871.
In connection with the schools provided for the general
law of the State, the B oard has authority to estabish and Institute
in which may be taught all branches necessary to prepare students
for advanced classes in college, for business.

Since the organization of the Independent District the following
persons have served as principals of the Graded Schoo;
J. L. Craig, J. N. David, W. M. Blair, Joseph Roseir, and C. R. Ogden.
The school reached it highest enrollment last year.
The course required for graduation is, Reading, Ray's Higher
Arithmetic, completed; Reed and Kellogg's Higher Lessons in
English, completed ; Physiology, Cutter's Comprehensive,
completed; U. S. History, Montgomery, compledted; Civil Government
Dole, completed; Gerneral History, Myers' completed;
Shaw's English Literature, completed; Nat. Philosophy, Avery,
completed; Book-keeping, Meservey, completed; Ray's Higher
Algebra, completed; Hill's Rhetorie, completed; Geometry,
Wentworth, five books; Honston's Physical Geography.
This course of study usually requires four terms for completion.
